Hikone Map Poster & Print
Hikone lies on the eastern shore of Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture. On a map, the lake fills the western side, and the town spreads inland from the shore. At its centre is the castle hill, surrounded by moats that form clear rectangular outlines, with the old castle-town streets arranged around them.
Beyond the historic centre, the town extends in a more regular pattern, with railway lines and main roads running parallel to the lakeshore. To the east, the land rises toward the Suzuka Mountains, and the built-up area gives way to fields and hills.
Hikone Castle is one of only twelve castles in Japan with an original keep, and it is a designated National Treasure. Below it lies the Genkyūen garden. The town is also known for Hikonyan, a popular cat mascot. A Hikone map poster shows the castle, its moats and the lakeshore in precise, quiet lines.
