Temple precincts
The Western and Eastern precincts of Hōryū-ji appear as large, clean rectangles, oriented to the compass and far more regular than anything else around them.

关于地图
Hōryūji Map Poster & Print
Hōryūji takes its name from the temple at its heart, Hōryū-ji, founded in the early seventh century and associated with Prince Shōtoku. Its wooden buildings are counted among the oldest surviving wooden structures in the world, and in 1993 the site was among Japan's first UNESCO World Heritage listings, as the Buddhist Monuments in the Hōryū-ji Area.
On the map the temple is unmistakable. Its Western and Eastern precincts form large rectangular blocks set to the points of the compass, while the surrounding streets are smaller, irregular and village-like. To the south the land opens into fields toward the Yamato River, and a railway line crosses the plain not far from the temple grounds.
A Hōryūji map poster captures that contrast between ordered temple ground and informal lanes. In Noir the precinct outlines read as pale geometry on a dark field; in Paper they recall the careful plans of old temple surveys. It is a quiet subject, suited to anyone who has walked the pine-lined approach to the great south gate.

Village lanes
Around the temple, narrow and slightly winding streets keep the scale of an old temple town, with small blocks and short lanes filling the gaps.
Toward the Yamato River
South of the settlement the street network loosens into fields and waterways as the land descends gently toward the Yamato River.
