Icheon lies in the south-east of Gyeonggi Province, where the Seoul metropolitan area gives way to low hills and farmland. On a map, the compact city centre sits beside a stream, with apartment blocks and a few main avenues surrounded by a wide landscape of fields, villages and wooded slopes. Expressways pass through the area, linking it to Seoul and the south.
The city has two long-standing reputations. Its rice is known throughout Korea, and the flat, irrigated fields around the centre show up as open spaces between roads. Icheon is also a centre of ceramics, with kilns and workshops concentrated in its pottery villages, and it is part of UNESCO's Creative Cities Network for crafts and folk art.
