Ilo Map Poster
Ilo lies on the arid coast of southern Peru, and the map shows a town squeezed between two strong edges: the Pacific on one side and dry, bare hills on the other. The historic centre forms a compact grid near the waterfront, with piers reaching into the sea, while newer districts spread along the coast and onto the terraces behind the town.
The port is important for mining in southern Peru, and a large copper smelter operates on the coast north of the city. Ilo also has a special place in regional history: a stretch of beach nearby, known as Bolivia Mar, was granted to Bolivia to give the landlocked country access to the Pacific. The Osmore river reaches the sea near the town.
An Ilo map poster is a study in contrast. The detailed grid of streets and the lines of the port sit against wide, empty desert and the smooth arc of the coast. In black and white that emptiness becomes part of the design, and the shoreline gives the image a clean, confident edge, typical of towns on this desert coast.
