Imphal Map Poster
Imphal is the capital of Manipur, spread across a broad oval valley enclosed by forested hills in India's northeast. From above, the city centres on Kangla, the historic seat of the Manipuri kings. This large enclosure, bounded by moats, is now open as a heritage park. Around it, streets spread across the valley floor, crossed by the Imphal River and several smaller streams.
The city is also known for Ima Keithel, a large market where all the traders are women, and for the Battle of Imphal in 1944, one of the decisive campaigns of the Second World War in Asia. South of the city, in the same valley but outside the urban frame, lies Loktak Lake with its floating islands of vegetation.
