Jamkhandi lies in the Bagalkot district of northern Karnataka, on the broad, open land of the Deccan plateau not far from the Krishna river. From above, the town has a dense older core of narrow, irregular streets, with newer neighbourhoods spreading outward in more regular blocks. Beyond them, the map turns into wide agricultural land crossed by straight roads.
Until 1948, Jamkhandi was the capital of a princely state ruled by the Patwardhan family, and the older part of town reflects that role, with a compact centre that grew around the seat of the court. Main roads leave the centre toward neighbouring towns, forming strong lines across the map, while smaller lanes fill in the historic quarter.
Today Jamkhandi is a regional town surrounded by sugarcane and other crops, typical of this part of Karnataka. A Jamkhandi map poster shows both layers: the dense old centre of a former princely capital, and the open, flat farmland that extends in every direction around it.
