The Cardo
Gerasa's colonnaded main street runs as a single straight line through the ancient city. It is one of the clearest Roman axes to survive and the backbone of the poster.

关于地图
Jarash Map Poster & Print
Jarash, also written Jerash, lies in the hills north of Amman. The town has two very different street patterns side by side. A seasonal stream, the Wadi Jarash, runs roughly north to south through the valley. The modern town spreads over its eastern side, and the ancient city of Gerasa occupies much of the western side, enclosed within the line of its old walls.
Gerasa is one of the best-preserved Roman provincial cities anywhere, and its plan still shows on a modern map. The Cardo, a long colonnaded street, runs through the ruins in a straight line. At its southern end it opens into the Oval Plaza, an unusual elliptical forum surrounded by columns. Hadrian's Arch stands to the south, outside the old walls.
The Jerash Festival brings music and theatre into the ancient theatres each summer. A Jarash map poster places two thousand years of planning in a single frame. On one side of the wadi is the Roman city's disciplined axis. On the other is the looser grid of the town that grew up beside it.

Oval Plaza
At the southern end of the Cardo lies the elliptical plaza, a rare shape in Roman planning. On the map it forms a distinct curved space among the ruins.
Wadi Jarash
The stream valley separates the ancient city from the modern town. The contrast between the orderly Roman plan and the newer streets across the wadi defines the whole composition.
