Kaiserslautern lies in Rhineland-Palatinate, in a valley on the northern edge of the Palatinate Forest. On a map, the city is a dense urban area surrounded by forest on almost every side, with hills rising close to the centre. Main roads leave through valleys, and the Autobahn passes to the north.
The city is best known for football. 1. FC Kaiserslautern plays at the Fritz-Walter-Stadion on the Betzenberg, a hill overlooking the centre. The Emperor Frederick Barbarossa built a palace here in the twelfth century, and parts of its remains still survive. Kaiserslautern also has a large American military community, linked to the nearby Ramstein Air Base, and a technical university.
