Kalat lies in central Balochistan, in a high valley about two thousand metres above sea level, surrounded by dry, rugged ridges. It was the seat of the Khanate of Kalat, which ruled much of the region for centuries until the mid-twentieth century. The town is small, and on a map it appears as a compact cluster in a wide, open landscape.
The streets are few and irregular. They follow the valley floor and the routes that lead out into the surrounding country. Orchards and fields fill the flatter ground where there is water, and beyond them the terrain rises into hills. The empty land around the town is part of the image: the settlement reads as a small, concentrated mark.
