Kallakkurichchi lies in northern Tamil Nadu, on flat agricultural land that stretches east from the Kalvarayan Hills. In 2019 it became the headquarters of the newly created Kallakurichi District, carved out of Viluppuram, and the town has been growing since. Its centre is a dense cluster of commercial streets around the main road junctions, surrounded by residential quarters and farmland.
From above, the most striking elements are the irrigation tanks scattered across the landscape, their curved embankments holding rainwater for the surrounding fields. Roads radiate outward from the town toward neighbouring settlements, crossing channels and farm tracks. A Kallakkurichchi map poster shows this pattern clearly: a knot of streets in the middle, with water and fields spread around it.
To the west, the Kalvarayan Hills rise from the plain, a forested range that frames the horizon and is known for its hill villages and waterfalls. The Gomukhi Dam, fed by streams from these hills, lies not far from the town and supports irrigation in the area, underlining how much the landscape here depends on stored water.
