Kanazawa Map Poster & Print
Kanazawa lies on the Sea of Japan side of Honshu, between the Sai and Asano rivers, which run roughly parallel to the coast. The castle park and the Kenroku-en garden sit together on the high ground between them. From above, the old centre is a web of narrow, bending lanes, planned to confuse attackers and kept largely intact.
Kanazawa was not heavily bombed in the Second World War, so much of its Edo-period layout survives. The Higashi Chaya teahouse district lies across the Asano River, and the Nagamachi samurai quarter keeps its earthen walls and small canals. Kenroku-en is considered one of the three great landscape gardens of Japan, and the circular 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art stands nearby.

The Sai and Asano rivers run on either side of the old town. They give the map two strong diagonal lines and mark the edges of the historic core.
