Kāraikkudi is the main town of Chettinad, the historic homeland of the Nattukottai Chettiar merchant community in southern Tamil Nadu. On the map it spreads across level, dry ground. Its streets are broad and fairly regular, and they are lined with deep plots. Railway lines cross the town, and roads lead out to the smaller Chettinad villages scattered around it.
The town is known for its Chettiar mansions: large courtyard houses built with wealth from trade across Southeast Asia. Many have long frontages on quiet streets. It is also the namesake of Chettinad cuisine, and it is home to Alagappa University. Water tanks, both temple tanks and village reservoirs, appear throughout the district as clean geometric shapes.
