Kargil Map Poster & Print
Kargil lies in Ladakh at roughly 2,700 metres, where the Suru River cuts through dry, steep mountains. There is little flat ground, so the town packs itself along the river terraces and the valley floor. From above it looks like a thin, dense strip of streets held in place by rock on both sides.
The town sits on the highway between Srinagar and Leh, and that road is the strongest line on the map, bending with the river before climbing away towards the passes. The name is also widely known from the 1999 conflict fought on the heights nearby, which brought this remote valley to international attention.
A Kargil map poster works almost like a relief study even in flat line work: the way streets bunch along the Suru, stop at the foot of the slopes and follow the highway out of town says a great deal about the terrain. It is a strong, austere image well suited to black and white.
