Kastamonu Map Poster & Print
Kastamonu lies inland in Turkey's western Black Sea region, in a valley surrounded by wooded hills. From above, the town stretches along the Karaçomak stream, which runs through the middle. The old quarter clusters below a steep rock topped by a castle. Newer districts spread along the valley floor, and the roads leading out follow the curves of the hills.
The town is known for its Ottoman-era mosques, wooden houses and old covered markets, many of which survive in the historic centre. In 1925, Atatürk chose Kastamonu to announce his hat reform, part of a wider series of changes in dress, and the event is still remembered locally. The castle dates back to the Byzantine and Çobanoğulları periods.
