Keur Médoune lies in the Diourbel Region of central Senegal. This is flat, sandy country in the groundnut basin, where towns and villages grow outward across open land instead of climbing hills or following rivers. From above, the pattern is loose and horizontal. Compounds and plots are separated by sandy lanes, and paths run out into cultivated fields.
The wider region is closely tied to the Mouride brotherhood and to the agricultural life of the Senegalese interior. Settlements here have expanded rapidly in recent decades, and a map shows it clearly. Regular blocks of planned plots sit alongside older, more irregular clusters of lanes.
