Kodarma lies in northern Jharkhand, on the edge of the Chota Nagpur plateau, where forested hills rise out of farmland. The town has a compact centre, and roads lead out towards Hazaribagh, Gaya and the surrounding district. A main railway line passes through, and its station is an important stop in the area.
The region is known as India's mica belt. For much of the twentieth century, Kodarma was famous for mica mining, and it was often called the mica capital of the country. Nearby, the Tilaiya Dam on the Barakar River forms a large reservoir with an irregular shoreline winding into the hills.
A Kodarma map poster shows these layers: the town streets, the railway, the forested slopes and the water of the plateau. In black and white, the hills create quiet, open areas, and the roads and rail line cross them in clear lines, a restrained portrait of an eastern Indian town.

The hills around Kodarma formed the heart of India's mica mining region. Old workings and tracks are scattered across the forested plateau around the town.

The reservoir behind Tilaiya Dam on the Barakar River lies nearby. Its long, branching shoreline winds between the hills and makes a striking shape on a wider map.
