Kualakapuas is the main town of Kapuas Regency in Central Kalimantan, on the island of Borneo. It lies in the lowlands close to the southern coast, where rivers run slowly toward the Java Sea. On a map the town follows the water. Streets run along the riverbank, and the built-up area stretches along the shore more than it spreads inland.
The ground around the town is flat and often wet, and the region is known for peat and swamp land crossed by rivers and channels. From above, the long straight lines of drainage and access canals contrast with the natural curves of the river. The settled area, by comparison, looks small and concentrated.
