Lake Ohrid is one of the oldest lakes in Europe, thought to have existed for more than a million years. It lies in a deep basin between mountains on the border of North Macedonia and Albania, and its outline is fairly compact and smooth, closer to an oval than the jagged shapes of Alpine lakes.
The town of Ohrid sits on the northeastern shore, its old quarter climbing a hill above the water, with the church of St John at Kaneo standing on a cliff at the edge. At the southern end, near the border, the monastery of St Naum is fed by springs that flow into the lake.
The lake and the town share a UNESCO listing for both their natural and cultural value. A Lake Ohrid map poster shows the basin as a quiet, open shape, with the dense streets of the old town concentrated in one corner and lighter settlement elsewhere.
