Le Blanc-Mesnil is a commune in Seine-Saint-Denis, in the inner ring of suburbs northeast of Paris. Its map is a study in suburban layering: fine-grained streets of detached houses, larger blocks of postwar housing, avenues carrying traffic toward the capital, and railway tracks cutting through the whole. To the north it borders Paris–Le Bourget, the historic airport now used for business aviation and known for its air show.
What makes the plan distinctive is the contrast in scale. Small pavilion lots produce a dense, almost woven texture of short streets, while the housing estates appear as broad parcels with buildings set in open space. The RER B line crosses the commune on its way between central Paris and Charles de Gaulle airport, forming one of the strongest straight lines in the composition.
