Le Gosier lies on the south coast of Grande-Terre in Guadeloupe, a short distance east of Pointe-à-Pitre. On a map, its coastline is its signature. The shore is a run of small bays and rocky points, and in several places roads follow the water closely. Inland, the streets loosen into a scatter of neighborhoods over low, gently rolling limestone country.
Just off the town lies the Îlet du Gosier, a small island with a lighthouse, separated from the mainland by a narrow stretch of water. On paper it is a neat detached shape that anchors the whole composition. To the west, the Bas-du-Fort area forms part of the commune, with the marina basins and the old Fort Fleur d'Épée overlooking the approaches to the harbor.
