Les Orres lies on the slopes south of Embrun in the Hautes-Alpes, looking out over the Lac de Serre-Ponçon. The commune has an old village and several hamlets on the lower hillside, and a purpose-built ski station higher up, created in 1970. On a map, winding roads link these levels in steps across the forested slope.
The lake below is one of the largest reservoirs in Western Europe, formed by a dam on the Durance. It gives the resort a view that few places in the Alps share. The station has two levels, Les Orres 1650 and 1800, with slopes rising through larch forest toward open ground.
A Les Orres map poster sets these layers against each other. The lower slopes are dotted with hamlets and farmland, the road climbs in bends through the forest, and the station forms a compact group of buildings higher up. Depending on the frame, the lake appears along one edge as a broad shape of water that contrasts with the mountain lines.
