Loxstedt lies in the district of Cuxhaven in Lower Saxony, directly south of Bremerhaven on the eastern side of the Weser estuary. It is a municipality of many villages rather than a single town, and the map shows this clearly: small clusters of streets scattered across a flat, low landscape instead of one concentrated centre.
The land here is marsh and moor, shaped over centuries by dikes and drainage. Long straight ditches divide the fields into narrow strips, and roads run along raised lines between them. Toward the river, the broad channel of the Weser and its dikes form a strong edge. The railway and main roads link the villages to Bremerhaven and Bremen.
