Lyndhurst is a township in Bergen County, New Jersey, a few miles west of Manhattan. Its map splits in two. The western part is a dense grid of residential streets running up from the Passaic River, which forms the township's western boundary. The eastern part is largely made up of the Meadowlands, a wide area of tidal marsh, creeks and wetland.
Where the two meet, commercial and industrial land lies alongside highways and rail lines. NJ Transit trains stop at stations within the township, connecting it to Hoboken and New York. In the Meadowlands, parks and nature reserves protect areas of marsh, and on a clear day the Manhattan skyline is visible across the reeds.
A Lyndhurst map poster shows a suburb built on the edge of an estuary. There are the tight, regular blocks near the river, the winding lines of tidal creeks to the east and the straight infrastructure between them.
