Magṭa‘ Laḥjar is a town in the Brakna region of southern Mauritania, in the Sahel belt between the Sahara and the Senegal River valley. It sits on the long national road that runs east from Nouakchott into the interior, and the highway is the strongest line on the map. The town is arranged along it and around it.
Away from the road, the street pattern is loose and open. Compounds are spaced across sandy ground, and tracks run between them rather than paved streets. The land around the town is dry, with sand and rocky terrain, and it is sparsely marked on any map.
