Mahād lies in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, in the Konkan belt between the Sahyadri hills and the Arabian Sea. The Savitri river winds past the town, and from above it's the river and the surrounding hills that set the shape. Streets squeeze into the flatter ground along the banks, and the built area thins quickly where slopes begin.
The town has a significant place in modern Indian history. In 1927, B. R. Ambedkar led the Mahad Satyagraha at the Chavdar Tale, asserting the right of Dalits to draw water from a public tank. Raigad Fort, the seat of Shivaji's kingdom, stands in the hills not far away, and the Mumbai-Goa highway passes near the town.
