Mampong is a town in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, north-east of Kumasi. It sits on higher ground at the edge of the Mampong scarp, and the map reflects that position: main roads follow the lie of the land, and the built-up area spreads along routes that run over and around the uneven terrain rather than across a flat grid.
The town holds an important place in Ashanti tradition. Mampong is the seat of the Mamponghene, whose Silver Stool ranks second only to the Golden Stool of the Asantehene, and the town remains a significant ceremonial and administrative centre for the surrounding area.
