Maryborough lies on the Mary River in south-east Queensland, a short drive inland from Hervey Bay and the Fraser Coast. From above, the city is laid out on a broad grid that meets the river in a wide bend, with the historic centre close to the water and newer suburbs spreading outward. Long straight streets lined with low houses give the map a calm, regular structure.
In the nineteenth century Maryborough was a major port of entry for immigrants arriving in Queensland, and the old wharf precinct near the river still holds many heritage buildings. The city is also the birthplace of P. L. Travers, author of Mary Poppins, commemorated by a statue in the centre. Timber Queenslander houses raised on stumps are a familiar sight throughout its streets.
