Matera Map Poster & Print
Matera, in the southern Italian region of Basilicata, is built on the edge of a deep limestone ravine, the Gravina. Its map is unusual: the upper town has ordinary streets and piazzas, but on the ravine side the ground falls away into the Sassi. These two districts of cave dwellings and stacked houses are cut into the rock, joined by stairways and narrow lanes.
The Sassi were among the first sites in southern Italy added to the UNESCO World Heritage list, and in 2019 Matera was a European Capital of Culture. The rock churches, cisterns and terraces have also made the city a regular film location, often chosen to stand in for ancient Jerusalem.
A Matera map poster shows the city at its most readable. The Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso lie on either side of the Civita ridge, where the cathedral stands. Above them the planned streets of the newer town fan out, and the Gravina runs along the eastern edge as a strong, winding line.

Civita ridge
A narrow spur between the two Sassi carries the cathedral and the oldest part of the settlement. It is the fixed centre around which the rest of the historic city is arranged.
Gravina ravine
The ravine curves along the edge of the old city, with the plateau of rock churches on the far side. Its sharp line frames the Sassi and gives the map its sense of depth.
