Mékhé lies in the Thiès region of Senegal, on the main route between Dakar and Saint-Louis. The countryside around it is flat, sandy and open, part of the country's groundnut-growing belt, and the map shows a compact town set in a wide landscape of fields, tracks and small villages rather than any dramatic natural feature.
The town's streets form a loose grid around a central area, with the national road passing through and the historic Dakar–Saint-Louis railway running close by. Mékhé is known in Senegal for its artisans, particularly leatherworkers and shoemakers, whose workshops have long been part of local life and trade.
