Mentana sits on the low hills north-east of Rome, where the city's outer suburbs give way to the Sabine countryside. The historic centre occupies a raised site built around a castle, with short, curving streets following the shape of the ridge. Newer residential areas spread down the slopes and along the roads toward Rome and Monterotondo.
The town's name is known across Italy because of the Battle of Mentana in November 1867. Garibaldi's volunteers, trying to take Rome, were defeated here by papal and French troops. A memorial to the fallen stands in the town, and the battle remains an important episode in the story of Italian unification.
A Mentana map poster shows the old core as a tight cluster on its height and the looser modern districts spreading out around it. Olive groves, farmland and country lanes fill the edges of the frame. This combination of a medieval hill town and later growth is typical of Lazio and is easy to read in simple black lines.
