Merke Map Poster & Print
Merke lies in Zhambyl Region in southern Kazakhstan, on the northern side of the Kyrgyz Ala-Too range, close to the border with Kyrgyzstan. The main road between Almaty and Taraz passes through, and a river of the same name comes down from the mountains to water the orchards and fields around the town.
The town is laid out mostly on a grid, with long straight streets lined by single-storey houses and garden plots. On the map this produces an orderly pattern of rectangular blocks, interrupted by the river's course and the irrigation channels that follow it. The mountains rise just beyond the southern edge of the frame.
The area has been settled for a long time: medieval Merke was a stop on the Silk Road, and archaeologists have studied the remains of the old settlement. A Merke map poster brings the present-day town into view, with its grid, river and highway.
