Miabi Map Poster & Print
Miabi lies in the province of Kasaï-Oriental in the south-central Democratic Republic of the Congo, not far from the provincial capital Mbuji-Mayi. From above it has little in common with a planned city. Its streets form a loose web that follows the terrain and gradually thins into tracks, fields and patches of woodland on the plateau.
The surrounding Kasai region is known for diamond-bearing gravels, and mining has shaped the economy and the movement of people across this part of the country for generations. On a map this shows up only indirectly, in the unpaved roads and paths that radiate out from the town toward the villages and workings in the countryside.
A Miabi map poster keeps that informal character. There is no rigid grid to rely on. Instead the drawing is made of clusters of lanes, meeting points and the long routes that tie the town to its neighbours. The result is a spare, organic image, very different from the tidy blocks of a European or North American city.

A few longer routes leave the town toward Mbuji-Mayi and the surrounding villages. They appear as the strongest lines on the sheet and anchor the composition.
Open plateau edges
On the outskirts the built area gives way to open ground, so the drawing fades gently at its borders instead of ending in a hard urban boundary.
