Minas Novas Map Poster & Print
Minas Novas is one of the older towns of northeastern Minas Gerais, in the Jequitinhonha Valley region. It began during the colonial gold rush of the eighteenth century, and its name, meaning new mines, recalls that time. On a map, the historic core shows the irregular street pattern typical of Brazilian mining towns, with lanes that follow the land rather than a planned grid.
The town sits in hilly country, and its streets run along ridges and down into small valleys. The older centre is tight and winding. Newer neighbourhoods spread out along the approach roads in looser, longer lines. The Jequitinhonha region is known for its craft traditions, especially clay work, and the town remains a local centre for the surrounding rural communities.
