Mohammadia Map Poster & Print
Mohammadia lies in Mascara province in northwest Algeria, on the Habra plain between the Tell hills and the coast east of Oran. Known in the colonial period as Perrégaux, it grew as an agricultural centre and a stop on the railway, and its plan shows that history: a rectilinear street grid, a rail line passing through and farmland running out in every direction.
The plain is irrigated and intensively farmed, with citrus orchards among its best-known crops. On a map this gives the town a very clean frame: straight rural roads and field boundaries continue the lines of the urban grid, and newer districts extend outward in larger, more loosely arranged blocks on the edges.
