Montecristo Map Poster & Print
Montecristo lies in the Tyrrhenian Sea, south of Elba, as part of the Tuscan Archipelago. It is a small, roughly round island of granite, rising steeply from the sea to a high central summit. Its coastline is rocky and largely inaccessible, with Cala Maestra providing the only regular landing place.
The island is a strictly protected nature reserve, and visits are limited in number. Near the landing stands a former royal villa, and higher up lie the ruins of the monastery of San Mamiliano, the monk after whom the island is said to be named. Alexandre Dumas made Montecristo famous as the site of hidden treasure in The Count of Monte Cristo.
