Morretes sits between the steep, forested wall of the Serra do Mar and the lowlands that run toward the bay of Paranaguá. The Nhundiaquara River runs through the town, and the historic centre lines its banks, with a small network of streets and a bridge linking both sides.
The town dates back to the colonial era and is closely associated with barreado, a slow-cooked beef dish that has become a regional emblem. Visitors often arrive on the scenic railway from Curitiba, which descends the mountains through tunnels and viaducts before reaching the plain.
A Morretes map poster frames the meeting of two landscapes. Contour-like roads twist down from the highlands, the river braids through the lowland, and the compact old town sits at the point where they meet. In black and white, the tight centre and the wide green margins become strong, simple shapes.
