Mountain View lies on the flat plain of the Santa Clara Valley, between Palo Alto and Sunnyvale, with San Francisco Bay to the north and the Santa Cruz Mountains rising to the south-west. The map divides into clear bands running parallel to the bay: residential neighbourhoods around El Camino Real, a downtown along the railway, and a broad zone of campuses and parkland north of US-101.
Downtown Mountain View centres on Castro Street, a walkable strip of restaurants and shops ending at the Caltrain station. North of the highway lies the Googleplex, the headquarters of Google, surrounded by other technology offices. The Computer History Museum sits nearby, and the city is closely tied to the story of Silicon Valley, from early semiconductor firms to today's internet companies.
At the bay's edge, Shoreline Park and the Shoreline Amphitheatre sit on former landfill, surrounded by marshes, sloughs and ponds.
