The land is flat and agricultural, and from above the town appears as a dense knot of lanes surrounded by the irregular patchwork of fields and water channels that feed them. The Gadilam river flows through the district nearby.
The town is best known for its sugar industry. A large sugar factory has operated here for well over a century, and the cane grown in the surrounding countryside has long shaped local life and trade.
