Nghĩa Lộ lies in the Mường Lò valley, one of the largest flat basins in the mountainous northwest of Vietnam. From above the town is a compact cluster of streets in the middle of a green bowl. Rice terraces and paddies spread out across the valley floor, and steep, forested mountains rise on every side.
The valley is the traditional homeland of the Black Thai people, and their culture, including the xòe dance recognised by UNESCO, is strongly tied to this place. Around the town, villages of stilt houses sit among the fields. On a map they appear as small clusters of buildings strung along roads and streams.
A Nghĩa Lộ map poster shows the unusual geometry of a flat valley enclosed by mountains. The town's streets run in relatively straight lines on the level ground. The roads wind as soon as they climb out of the basin, and the fields add a fine texture.
