Opole lies on the Oder River in southern Poland, and water shapes its centre in an unusual way. Pasieka island sits in the river, and a narrow canal, the Młynówka, runs between the island and the old town. Houses on its bank rise directly from the water. The medieval streets around the market square sit just east of this channel, compact and regular.
Opole is one of the historic capitals of Silesia and was once the seat of a line of Piast dukes. The Piast Tower, a remnant of their castle, still stands on the island. Since the 1960s the city has hosted the National Festival of Polish Song, held in the amphitheatre on Pasieka.
An Opole map poster shows the river, the canal, the island with its parks and paths, and the orderly blocks of the old town, with later districts spreading along both banks. It is a well-balanced composition, in which water and streets share the centre almost equally.
