Island in the Velikaya
The river divides around a central island, the site of the medieval fortress. This split channel is the defining feature of the whole map.

关于地图
Ostrov Map Poster & Print
Ostrov stands on the Velikaya River in Pskov Oblast, south of Pskov itself, and its name simply means island. The town grew around an island in the river where a fortress once stood, and that origin is still easy to read on a map. The Velikaya splits into two channels with the island between them, and the streets on both banks turn toward the crossing.
Ostrov is best known for its two chain suspension bridges, built in the mid-nineteenth century and among the oldest surviving bridges of their kind in Russia. They link the island to each shore, and on a map they appear as two short, precise lines across the water. Around them, the town extends in a modest grid of low houses, churches and gardens.
An Ostrov map poster shows how a river can decide a town's shape. The curves of the Velikaya carry the composition, the island gives it a centre, and the streets on either bank balance each other. The result is an unusually harmonious small-town map that works in almost any room.

Chain bridges
Two nineteenth-century chain bridges connect the island to the banks. On paper they are small marks, yet they explain why the town is laid out as it is.
Two-bank grid
Streets on both sides of the river form a regular pattern of low-rise blocks, and their lines turn to meet the bridges at the centre.
