Ouro Preto do Oeste lies in central Rondônia, along the BR-364 highway that crosses the state between Porto Velho and Cuiabá. The town grew from a federal agricultural settlement project in the 1970s, when settlers from other parts of Brazil received plots of land along the new highway.
