Petrila Map Poster & Print
Petrila lies in the Jiu Valley in Hunedoara County, just east of Petroșani, where the East Jiu river runs through a narrow corridor in the Southern Carpathians. On a map the town is long and slender, its streets squeezed along the river and the road beside it, with neighbourhoods reaching a short way up the side valleys before the mountains take over.
For more than a century Petrila was a coal town. Its mine was one of the oldest in the Jiu Valley and worked until 2015, and the headframes and industrial buildings that remain have become a symbol of the valley's mining past. Like its neighbours, the town has since been looking for a new role, with the surrounding mountains drawing hikers.
A Petrila map poster shows how completely the valley shaped the town. The river and the main road run side by side through the frame, and almost everything else hangs from them in narrow strips. It is a spare, linear composition, with the dark line of the settlement drawn through a wide field of empty mountain.

Hemmed in by the valley walls, Petrila stretches out in a thin band rather than a round cluster, with housing blocks and older houses lined up along the main road.
Side valleys
Short streets climb into small side valleys and end where the slopes steepen, giving the edges of the settlement a branching, comb-like outline against the empty mountainside.
