Petrolina Map Poster & Print
Petrolina lies on the left bank of the São Francisco River in the far west of Pernambuco, directly across the water from Juazeiro in Bahia. On a map the two cities form a mirrored pair, joined by the Presidente Dutra Bridge, with the broad river and its islands running between them. Petrolina's centre follows a regular grid that begins at the riverbank.
Away from the river the grid extends into wide avenues and newer residential districts laid out across flat ground. Beyond the built-up area, the map changes character: straight irrigation canals and rectangular plots stretch across the semi-arid land. Irrigation from the São Francisco has turned the surrounding sertão into one of Brazil's main regions for export fruit, especially mangoes and grapes, and vineyards in the valley produce wine, unusual so close to the equator.
