Petroúpolis Map Poster & Print
Petroúpolis is a municipality in the north-western part of the Athens basin, pressed against the lower slopes of Mount Aigaleo. On a map, the built area fills the lower ground in a close mesh of residential streets. Towards the mountain the pattern loosens, and then it stops entirely where the slope becomes too steep, leaving a clear edge of open, wooded hillside.
The suburb grew quickly in the twentieth century, as Athens spread outward across the plain. Its best-known landmark is the Theatro Petras, an open-air theatre set into a former quarry. Every summer it hosts a well-known festival of music and theatre. Seen from above, the quarry is a distinctive notch cut into the hillside at the edge of town.
A Petroúpolis map poster shows how the city meets the mountain. The dense grid of the lower neighbourhoods contrasts with the empty green ground above, and neighbouring municipalities continue the urban fabric seamlessly on the other sides.
