Industrial zone
The plant occupies a large area beside the town, its big building outlines and internal roads producing blocky, geometric shapes that contrast with the finer residential streets.

关于地图
Pikalëvo Map Poster & Print
Pikalëvo lies in the east of Leningrad Oblast, in a landscape of mixed forest, bog and small rivers toward the border with Vologda Oblast. The town grew around heavy industry in the Soviet period, and its layout still reflects that origin: a residential core of apartment blocks on one side, a sprawling industrial zone on the other, and railway sidings linking the two.
The plant here processed nepheline ore into alumina, cement and soda, which made Pikalëvo a single-industry town. In 2009 it drew national attention when closures at the plant led to protests and a widely broadcast visit by Vladimir Putin, who pressed the owners to restart production. The episode made the town's name a shorthand in Russia for the fragility of company towns.
On a Pikalëvo map poster, that dual structure is plain. The residential streets form a close, regular pattern of courtyards and short lanes, while the industrial area appears as large rectangular footprints and curving track. Around everything the forest leaves broad empty space, so the town reads as a small, dense island of lines surrounded by quiet paper.

Courtyard housing
Apartment buildings arranged around shared courtyards give the residential district an orderly rhythm of rectangles, typical of planned towns built in the second half of the twentieth century.
Forest surroundings
Dense woodland and wetland ring the town, leaving generous blank space on the map and making the settlement itself stand out as a compact, clearly bounded shape.
