Poděbrady lies on the Elbe in Central Bohemia, east of Prague. On a map the river is the first thing you notice, running along the northern side of town with its weir and lock. Just south of it stands the castle, and beside the castle opens the main square, named after the town's most famous figure, King George of Poděbrady.
From the square, a broad spa park stretches toward the railway station. The spa dates from the early twentieth century, after mineral springs were found beneath the town, and it gave Poděbrady its colonnade, its flower beds and a reputation for heart treatment that continues today.
