Podolsk lies just south of Moscow on the Pakhra river, which loops through the city in a series of tight bends. On a map the river is the defining feature. It divides neighbourhoods and leaves green floodplain and parkland along its curves, while streets and blocks spread across the higher ground on either side.
The Kursk railway and the Simferopol highway run north to south through the city, connecting it directly with Moscow. Around them, older streets near the centre give way to large Soviet-era and modern housing estates, and to industrial areas that reflect Podolsk's long history as a manufacturing town.
The city is home to the Central Archive of the Russian Ministry of Defence, which holds records from the Second World War and is consulted by families tracing relatives.
