Ponte de Lima Map Poster & Print
Ponte de Lima, in the Minho region of northern Portugal, is often described as the oldest town in the country, having received its charter in 1125 from Queen Teresa. It takes its name from the bridge across the Lima river, and on a map that crossing is the key feature: a long, narrow line spanning a broad, slow river with sandy banks.
The historic centre sits on the southern bank, a compact cluster of streets and squares around the church and the remains of medieval walls and towers. Along the riverbank, a wide avenue lined with trees runs beside the water, and the open riverside ground has long hosted the town's traditional market fairs.
A Ponte de Lima map poster shows how town and river are balanced. The bridge, partly Roman and partly medieval, leads to the northern bank and its smaller settlement, while beyond the town the valley opens into terraced farmland and vineyards producing Vinho Verde. The river's wide sweep makes the composition calm and spacious.
