Pyatykhatky, in Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk region, grew up around the railway, and the map still shows it. Rail lines cross the town and meet at a junction, and the sidings and station yard form the most prominent structure in the frame. Residential streets fill the surrounding blocks in a largely regular pattern, set against the wide, flat farmland of the steppe.
The name translates roughly as five huts, a reminder of how modest the settlement was before the railway gave it a reason to grow. Today it is a local centre for the surrounding countryside. The contrast between its orderly streets and the big agricultural fields beyond is one of the clearest things on the map, and one of the most satisfying to look at.
